How to plan a party picnic // My 27th Birthday

It was my 27th birthday last weekend and for my birthday this year I decided I would try and host a little picnic party to celebrate. The day was so lovely I thought I’d share my planning process and some of the top tips I’d recommend if you are also planning a picnic party!

Location

First of all location. I live in an apartment without a garden, so I decided to host my picnic in the local town gardens. I headed over about an hour before I told people to get there so I could set up our location and make sure we had a good spot! It turned out to be a beautiful day and we were really lucky with the weather! (A floor picnic was the contingency!)

Decorations

I wanted to make it a bit more of a celebratory occasion and elevate it from a normal picnic, so I decided to add a few decorate touches such as bunting, streamers, cushions, lots of blankets and little table – I think the whole area ended up looking really pretty and it definitely gave it more of a party feel. I hung the bunting from the trees and it gave it such a whimsical feel.

I also bought colourful party plates and cutlery in keeping with the colour theme for people to eat off of and serve up food.

Food

Now let get real. Food is the most important part of a picnic. I decided to organise most of the food (being the one with the dietary requirement, this just made it easier!) I also decided as I was the birthday girl I could call the shots and make it a vegan picnic, so that’s exactly what I did! We had the following food:

  • Potato Salad
  • Quinoa Salad
  • Bombay Potato Filo Pie
  • Dips & Bread
  • Antipasti
  • Rainbow Fruit Skewers
  • Biscuits
  • Crisps
  • Pink Lemonade & Prosecco

Everyone loved the food and couldn’t believe it was all vegan 🙂 educating people about how easy and delicious (and healthy!) it is to eat plant based is seriously the best feeling!

Entertainment

We decided to go simple and brought along a couple of garden games like boules, dodgeball vests (thanks Stace!), a ball for catch and skipping ropes. I can’t say they got a huge amount of use, but the boules kept the guys entertained for quite a while! We also had a little speaker with some summer music playing just for atmosphere (but not too loud for neighbours in the park – don’t worry!)

Overall it was just a perfect afternoon and I had the best birthday! Thank you to my beautiful family and friends for making it such a special day.

I also filmed bits of the picnic and naturally shared it over on YouTube if you want to see me birthday action!

Would you consider having a celebratory picnic?
