Did you know that animal agricultural is the number 1 cause of climate change and global warming?

Animal agriculture is the collective process of breeding, feeding, and killing of land animals for meat, dairy and other by-products, and it is the most destructive industry our planet faces.

51% of all global greenhouse emissions are created by livestock, compared to the 13% that all of the transportation on the entire planet contributes to, this includes all road, air, rail and sea vehicles. 

That is a huge discrepancy.

It’s all very well switching off our lights, buying LED lightbulbs, and washing our clothes at 30 degrees, but clearly if we actually want to make a meanginful impact in our fight against the rising temperature of our planet, we need to reduce the emissions caused by this industry. 

Animal agriculture is not only the single largest factor of climate change, but it is the main cause of deforestation and destruction of our rainforests, creation of ocean dead zones, species extinction, water pollution and global famine.

Let me talk through the cycle.

Hundreds of pounds of soy, corn and other grains are required to feed animals until they are slaughtered; for cows it is estimated that you need 60 pounds of animal feed to get 1 pound of beef, and this requires 2,500 gallons of water. This is a huge amount of energy, water and waste.

When you consider how much feed that is, but across the world humans still die from famine and hunger on a daily basis because they don’t have enough food, and yet we have enough food to feed 56 billion land animals which are then slaughtered for food; this is 8 times the worlds population over. I don’t know about you but that seems crazy to me.

In addition to that, rainforests are destroyed and cleared to make room for the soy and corn fields in order to feed the animals bred as livestock, which destroys habitats and ecosystems; it is estimated that 110 animal and insect species are lost every single day due to rainforest destruction. Rainforests are our planet’s lungs; without them, we can’t breathe. Livestock covers 45% of the total land mass of our planet.

The soy and corn which is grown to feed the animals is typically significantly genetically modified and is sprayed with tremendous amounts of chemicals. So not only are the rain forests destroyed to make room for the crops, the chemicals pollute the soil and earth which in turns runs into the rivers and oceans causing dead zones, wiping out marine life and contaminating fish, which are caught and eaten by humans. Finally, the chemicals within the feed being eaten by the animals is stored in their fat cells, which is then also consumed by humans.

It is a crazy cycle. Which is physically killing our planet.

These are some scary statistics, and emissions for animal agriculture are forecast to rise to 80% by 2050. We need to stop.

So what can we do as a species to collectively save our planet?

If everyone in the world stopped eating meat, or even reduced their meat consumption, greenhouse gases and pollution would rapidly decrease, rain forests would be saved, ocean contamination would decrease and dead zones could thrive again, and there would be enough grain available to feed the world population at least 7 times over!

In fact, by following a plant based diet you can cut your carbon emissions by 50%. You can literally half your impact compared to that of a meat eater.

I sometimes get told that 1 person can’t make a difference, but that’s a pretty significant impact if you ask me. All actions have consequences, so make sure you have conviction in the ripple effect you are making in the world around you, and you are comfortable with the imprint you leave.

In order to save our planet for future generations, we need to CHANGE. That change is needed right now. It isn’t a future issue we don’t need to worry about. It is happening right now.

I personally want to be part of the generation of human beings that tried to save the planet, not watch it burn around me because of appetite.

Because let’s be honest, that’s what it is. Humans like the taste of meat. We don’t need it to survive, we definitely don’t need it to thrive, we eat it because of taste. It’s pretty damn selfish. 

Going vegan or simply following a plant based diet, is so easy, so fulfilling, so rewarding, so healthy, so enlightening, so fulfilling and SO damn delicious. And it saves our planet too. It will be the best decision you ever make.

When I was a little girl I spent a lot of weekends at my Grandparents house getting spoiled and having sleepovers. I would watch in awe at my glamourous Grandmother Popo getting ready in the morning in a cloud of lotion, powders, creams and perfumes and I would watch as she applied her make up, did her hair, chose her jewellery (including clip on earrings) and I would try and learn how to be a grown up as fast as possible.

Throughout my early 20s applying body lotion was one of those things that came last on my priorities list when getting ready in the morning and was normally an activity saved for when I had a lonnnng time get ready. If you had told me 2 years ago I would be vegan, I would have laughed in your face.

If you had told me 1 year ago I would be about to embark on Rawgust, and try and stick to raw food throughout August as much as possible, I would also have laughed in your face.

Buuuuut, here we are. Laughing in my own face.

Today is the 1st August and I’m joining the Rawgust Movement and will attempt to stick to raw food as much as I can throughout the month! I will be documenting my journey, sharing recipes, tips, struggles and hopefully as much of the experience as possible!

So, what is a Raw Food?

Food is classified as ‘raw’ if it is:

  • Uncooked – never heated above 42 C/118 F degrees.

and preferably:

  • Unprocessed – as fresh (or wild) as possible
  • Organic – no irradiation, preservatives, pesticides or GMO

So, why eat raw food?

It is thought heating food above 115 degrees F (45 Celsius) has a number of impacts to the nutritional value of food, such as:

1. It kills enzymes. Enzymes help digest our food and although our bodies can create enzyme, the process takes a lot of energy and it can leave you feeling tired and heavy after a cooked food meal. In addition, the enzymes that our bodies makes are not as efficient and effective as the ones that are already within the foods we eat but are destroyed by heat.

As a result, food is not broken down as well as it could be and is harder to digest and it is generally believed that the human body has a limited amount of enzymes that it can produce; if the supply is depleted then organs will function less and less efficiently and this can accelerate aging and disease.

2. Cooking food changes the pH of the food and makes it acidic. The human body is naturally alkaline and so eating alkaline foods is essential for optimum health. Eating acidifying food makes the body a feeding ground for disease and can have wider health implications.

3. Cooking food can convert normally easy to absorb minerals into inorganic hard to absorb minerals. Inorganic minerals such as calcium are hard to absorb and might cause calcium stones, whereas organic ones are easier to digest, make you alkaline, help you get rid of too many acids

4. It destroys most vitamins due to the heat applied to the food, so humans have to eat more in order to get the vitamin levels required

5. It is thought to destroys the life force of the food – so in effect eating cooked food is eating dead food which leaves us feeling heavy and tired. Live food has live energy – which is why people often refer to the Raw Food diet as Living Food diet. Living foods can give humans more energy, and when you think about it a raw seed will grow if you plant it, a cooked seed won’t, or when you pick (raw) unripe fruit it continues to ripen for weeks, whereas cooked fruit starts to decay within days – this is because is it living, and this energy is transferred to us when we consume raw foods.

These reasons explain why most people on a raw food diet feel more energetic and have a stronger immune system!

What will I be eating throughout Rawgust?

Good question, and stayed tuned for the answers! I’ll be sharing recipes and reviews as I go and will be providing a weekly update how it has gone!

Generally raw foodists eat at least 75% of raw fruits, vegetables, (germinated) seeds, (germinated) nuts and super foods and sprouts. I will be blending, juicing, dehydrating, freezing and assembling all sorts of raw food dishes.

So yeah, here goes. Let’s go raw and see what happens!

I know it’s been a bit of a soggy British Summertime weekend, but I’ve been branching out from the monochrome rainbow recently and I want to share how I’ve been styling my favourite blush button floral dress to try and channel the Summer vibes.

This dress is so comfortable, flattering and easy to throw on. I was worried it was a little bit dressy for day-wear, but after I teamed it with converse I think it toned down the look a bit and has made the dress much more wearable.

The sleeves are cuffed and elasticated, so I prefer to wear them slightly rolled up to make it a bit more casual.

The slight slit in the front also makes the outfit a little edgier and takes away any risk of granny-chic!

I’ve also teamed it with my FAVOURITE ever Raybans that I have been just living in, and I threw on a simple faux leather black choker as well as my everyday silver rings to compliment the look and bring that bit of hippie edge I love.

I can’t get enough of floral dresses at the moment. I’ve put together a little selection of my favourite floral summer dresses below – most of which are currently in my basket which I’m trying to resist. I can’t get enough!
